FAQ

Everything you need to know about the PDF to Excel.

Does it work on all PDFs?

Best results with native PDFs. Scanned PDFs require OCR first.

Are merged cells handled?

Merged cells are approximated — complex layouts may need manual cleanup.

Is my file uploaded?

No. Everything runs locally in your browser.

What is the file size limit?

Process files up to the browser memory limit.

How many tables can be extracted?

All detected tables are extracted — each goes to its own Excel sheet.

Can I extract tables from scanned/image PDFs?

No — this tool extracts the text layer from native (digital) PDFs. For scanned documents or image-based PDFs, the text layer is empty. Use our OCR Extractor tool first to recognize the text, then copy the output into a spreadsheet. A combined OCR-to-Excel pipeline is on our roadmap.

Is Refinata better than iLovePDF for PDF to Excel?

Refinata offers two structural advantages: (1) Your PDF never leaves your device — zero upload, zero server storage. (2) You can preview the extracted table before downloading. The extraction accuracy depends on the PDF structure — both tools work best with clean, structured tables. For complex layouts, iLovePDF's server-side processing may handle some edge cases better, but Refinata is the only option that guarantees 100% data privacy.
